Kabali - Review

***************************************** Spoiler alert *********************************************

A rebel gangster whose pregnant wife (the only person in his life- the love of his life) brutally murdered right in front of his eyes by antagonist and his gang, Kabali is sent to prison for 25 years. He comes out from Jail after 25 years and avenges his wife's death.

The emotions the above line carries on script didn't translate on to the screen.

There was not a single scene where neither we understood the pain he has and is going through nor the burning fervor inside him to avenge his wife's death.I never felt kabali's fury nor did I see him as a powerful gangster.

I am not expecting thunderous dialogues or expensive shots or fight sequence to show his power.

There is not a single scene in God father where Don Corleone (except in his flashback) engages with any sort of violence still we strongly believed that he controls the city ,commands respect and if he dies all hell will break lose.

I will quote an example from Ranjith's movie itself. In madras, the moment anbu paints the election campaign ad on the wall we all felt its the beginning of blood shed. The scenes that follow where like Anbu is called to mari's house where he is asked to apologize and so on that's the impact screenplay should create.

Except for few places, the dialogues never created any impact, this again is because of the weak characterization of kabali.

In Baasha,"Enakku innoru per irukku" dialogue created waves of thunderous applause only because of the way the story had unfolded till that time.Because of the screenplay, a usual scene and dialogue became a cult.

Scenes were mediocre so was the narration and dialogues were a big let down.

The questions that dawned in me.

1. Confusing characterization of Kabali.

Was he really waiting for his release date with vengeance so that he could come out and avenge his wife's   death? That Kabali who does push ups (by which he is making a statement) before leaving the prison cell was never seen after that in the movie.

He gets emotional when Ritvika calls him appa everytime but stares at her getting abused for drugs through the window without any reaction.

He doesn't burst out to happiness neither while knowing that his daughter is alive nor when he meets his wife.

These are just few scenes to quote.

2. Velu character, this is height of stupidity.

As per the flashback sequence, Previous scene he slits the throat of pregnant Radhika apte next scene he decides to help her seeing her alive in the hospital and further raises kabali's daughter. Really?

3. End of Tony Lee.

At this stage of the movie Tony Lee and Kabali are roaming with a murderous rage to kill each other and here comes the climax scene where kabali comes to meet  the biggest gangster of Malaysia with a pistol under his wrist and starts shooting.

That moment director took us all back to 80s, I didn't expect that from Ranjith who made Madras.

4. Climax - This didn't create any reaction, it didn't matter if he is alive or dead because I haven't made any strong connection with Kabali's character.( Nayagan climax, Ramana Climax created huge impacts)

5. Too many characters, I just didn't get why there were so many characters and more puzzling was that Why Ranjith thought that every single person from Madras must be part of kabali.

To me none of these characters worked out, Ameer (John Vijay), Madras Johnny, Tony Lee and Kabali.

6. The screenplay, establishment of characters and scenes definitely lacked some brain.

7. Overuse of Magizhchi dialogue, background scoring was great but had the same issue.

Overuse of heavy music very often, in many places the scene would be average but the background scoring would be burning the speakers didn't sync well.

Now the pluses

1. Rajini - Rajini looks dapper in suit and him carrying himself with that swag is no surprise.

The performer rajini also has done a perfect job of what was asked.

As claimed by many that this is a Ranjith's movie where Rajini is the hero so it will be more of performance than usual masala but can someone explain if there were any exclusive scenes which showed the Rajini that we haven't seen in his recent films? by which I mean Rajini has been performing a share of drama, romance, humor and sentiment in all his movies so this not any exception.

Except for the dynamic Rajini who delivers punch dialogues and humour, everything else is business as usual with respect to him.

2. First 20 minutes or so.

3. Songs especially Mayanadhi song picturization

4. Radhika apte and Dhanshika, delivered what was required.

5. Ranjith's portrayal of women, the respect and dignity he maintains it on all his movies.

6. The underlying Dalit politics that Ranjith is talking since Madras.

Ranjith clearly seems to have lost his way halfway through. I guess he must have made some changes to the script to bring in some extent of Rajinism.I am sure Ranjith himself wouldn't be happy with the final product. He hasn't gone out and out on his way nor on Rajini's formula, this looks a bit confused.

Kabali - Average, purely from the screenplay perspective. Mundane scene creations and screenplay lacked intelligence.

Inception - are you awake ?

"Dreams",an exciting subject christopher nolan has taken in his hands this time. We all know how good he is on weaving intricated stories impeccably with his amazing script/screenplay writing ability. He proves himself again with a big hard bang by giving us the INCEPTION.such subjects gives you eternal freedom on anything and everything. It could be on visualizations or could be on characterizations or could be on atmosphere or could be on anything that you could imagine.Your imagination is your limit, when you go beyond that, the dream world exists from where Nolan makes a convincing story out of it.

Fantacy could have been an easy option but what the director has done in this movie is intelligence. you as an audience will be convinced on the subject completely no matter what.Though the movie is a pile of new ideas, the very core of the movie is the most interesting part which is 'Planting an idea in the mind of a person through dreams'. This left the audience with their jaws stuck atleast me. Ok goody, now you got a great bottomline, but can you enhance and develop it as a complete story ? "YES WHY NOT" says Nolan and he does that using "Nested dreams" - A dream inside a dream inside a dream inside a dream.... till you wakeup :-) interesting ain't it ? not yet ? ok how'bt this ? Those nested dreams can be shared by many people, will be designed by an architect and it will be controlled by a person. This is achieved using a technology called 'Dream-sharing'. what ya say now :-) ? I dont want to do the autopsy of the movie hence i leave it here about the story.

Certainly a great research and thought process has been done by Nolan and his crew before he took the pen in his hand,it shows on the screen and pays on the box office.Leonardo di caprio is my man, he is truly showing all the signs of a great actor and that is why he has become a favorite hero for all the good film makers. As the movie progresses, Nolan plants a thought in the audience mind too, that is to swing a totem once we reach home n check if it topples :-), i did it i bet you'll do too.

Verdict : Don't Miss it.PERIOD.

June 25 - My Birthday

Before I could forget my last year b'day celebrations and happenings here comes my next b'day today. Who said a year is a long time ? I disagree :-) nevertheless this day is special to me and wishes from friends and family makes it more than just special. My sister made gulab jaamun to celebrate her dear younger brother's b'day (:-)) he he ).Its a weekday so option of roaming out is ruled out but i'll go to 'Raavanan' movie tonight booked at sangam.

Personally in the past one year nothing has changed except my age and my age alone. I am still the same person who would immensely enjoy every note of good music that reaches my ears, I am still the same person who would go on journies without any destinations in my bullet. I am still the same person who doesnt grow old on staring at the eternal skies, I am still the same person who desires to bring down my weight but not doing that by hiding behind silly excuses :-). Hope this year would take me to the right places at the right time and more importantly with the right shape :-).

A healing song

A human being may have million superior qualities and capabilities over other living beings in this very earth, but of them all i personally believe that understanding music is the most distinguishing and gifted ability. A good music can light up your senses, it can magnify your happiness, can be soothing when you are in grief and on top of all it keeps you calm and more human. Thanks to Mozarts and Beethovans.I always believe no music or musician can be compared with each other. Every single piece of music that reaches inside you beyond just the ears deserves its own respect and accolades. The one posted below is one such composition from Yuvanshankar raja, he is immensely talented and still haven't got the recognition what he deserves. He deserves far better rewards for his soul-stirring melody numbers.

As far as me, this is yuvan's best, the best tune that such a illuminating lyrics can get.It lists always on top of my selections.

Hear it, It heals......

Sachin - The Superhuman

Prologue

A country, second richest in population is diversified in million things but stands united in very few cases and he is one among them. If you are born in india, naturally you'll prefer playing cricket over anyother sports. If you play cricket, naturally you'll prefer batting over bowling. If you bat you'll naturally try to replicate his postures and shots over anyother player. This is a primary reason why this country is able to produce many astonishing batsmans than bowlers after his arrival to Indian cricket. As a matter of fact, cricket did not made him famous, He made cricket famous in india. While he bats,He can stop trains in india, He can bring down the country's production by 5% in america, He can flood the roads with vehicles rushing back home to watch him bat,This genius can stop the time in India. To have such a incredible Fan Following, one should possess some exceptional qualities and he does possesses all of them.

Pick a quote arbitrarily that talks about Perseverance, He will completely fit as an example to that quote.
Pick a quote arbitrarily that talks about Caliber, He will completely fit as an example to that quote.
Pick a quote arbitrarily that talks about Humility, He will completely fit as an example to that quote.

He is the best at his profession, He is a genius of innovations, He is the benchmark batsman,He is who leaves you stranded without words when you tend to praise him,In short, He is what we all want to be.

He is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

While People are busy in publishing books, big books and huge books about him, I am paying my respect in a trivial way by writing this post.

Reigning 20 years and Raining records

When I was studying 3rd grade, he made his debut in international cricket and today after 20 years during which i have completed my 12 years of schooling, 5 years of my graduations and working for the last 5 years, he is still doing the same what he was doing then, ruling his game, Cricket.

Since he started playing cricket
- India has seen 7 new Prime ministers.
- US $ value has gone up to Rs.46 from Rs.17.
- 107 players have made their debuts in ODIs for India.
- 76 players have made their debuts in Test cricket for India.
- 2 generations has grown old watching him play.

but he still remains there and remains as big as he ever was, dances down the pitch and slams the ball straight behind the bowler for a six. He was a nightmare to the bowlers in the early years of his career and today he still remains a worst nightmare not only to the bowlers but to the captains as well.On the field he shows no respect to the bowlers what-so-ever but off the field, the humility that he shows is a lesson to every human being.

I wonder, could there be a person in this planet who could achieve as much as this man has done in 2 decades. He leaves no field unconquered. 20 Years is a imperative time for any individual human being. In the last 20 years this is what this super human has achieved.

Myriad number of his records
  • Youngest player to debut when he debuted.
  • Most number of fours scored in Test cricket.
  • Most number of Fifties scored in Test cricket.
  • Most number of Centuries scored in Test cricket.
  • second ever player to score 10 Test centuries against Australia,
a record remained unbeaten for 70 years set by Sir Jack Hobbs of England.
  • The first batsman to score 12,000 runs in Test cricket.
  • Most number of runs scored in Test Cricket.
  • Most number of fours scored in ODIs.
  • Most number of Fifties scored in ODIs.
  • Most number of Centuries scored in ODIs.
  • Most number of runs scored in a calendar year.
  • Most number of runs scored in an innings.
  • The first player to score 10,000 runs in ODIs.
  • The first player to cross every subsequent 1000-run mark that has been crossed in ODI cricket history.
  • Most number of runs scored in ODIs.
  • First player to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined.
  • Most number of Man of the Match titles.
  • Most number of Man of the series titles.
Few quotes about him by other cricketers

Shane Warne (Former Aussie spinner) :
" I'll be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the  head for six. He was unstoppable."

Allan Donald (Former SouthAfrican Paceman):
"Sachin Tendulkar has often reminded me of a veteran army colonel who has many medals on his chest to show how he has conquered bowlers all over the world"

Glenn McGrath (Former Aussie Paceman) :
"I still think Tendulkar is the best batsmen in the world ahead of Steve Waugh and Lara."

Anil Kumble (Former Indian Spinner/captain) :
"I am fortunate that I've to bowl at him only in the nets!"

Mark Taylor (Former Aussie captain) :
"We did not lose to a team called India...we lost to a man called Sachin"

Brian Lara (Former West Indies batsman):
"Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal."

Epilogue

To all you tourists who visit india, Dont forget to do 2 things when you are here
1. Visit Tajmahal
2. Watch sachin playing cricket.
Because both represents our country's culture and proves our extreme capabilities.
